About Us

Peter Coppola® was founded on a mission to revolutionize keratin treatments by prioritizing safety without sacrificing results. Peter Coppola, a renowned stylist and industry leader, was instrumental in the success of a major hair care company that popularized keratin smoothing treatments. However, he saw firsthand the risks posed by Formaldehyde and other harsh chemicals when exposed to heat during the treatment process.

Determined to create a safer alternative, Peter Coppola® took a bold step—developing the first-ever Formaldehyde-Free Keratin Treatment. His vision was simple: provide the same transformative benefits of smoother, stronger, and healthier hair without endangering the health of stylists, their clients, or salon environments.

Why We've Always Been Formaldehyde-Free

Leading the Way in Formaldehyde-Free Keratin

As of February 2025, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not yet implemented a nationwide ban on formaldehyde in hair-straightening products. The FDA proposed such a ban in October 2023, with an initial implementation date set for April 2024; however, this has been delayed, and the current expected date for the ban is March 2025.

In contrast, California has proactively addressed this issue. The state’s Toxic-Free Cosmetics Act, passed in September 2020, prohibits the use of formaldehyde and several other harmful chemicals in personal care products sold within California. This law took effect on January 1, 2025.

To enforce this ban, California requires manufacturers to reformulate their products to exclude formaldehyde and mandates accurate labeling to inform consumers. The California Department of Public Health’s Safe Cosmetics Program monitors compliance by collecting data on products and ensuring they meet the state’s safety standards. Non-compliant products are subject to removal from the market, and manufacturers may face legal action.

While the FDA’s nationwide ban is pending, California’s proactive measures aim to protect consumers and salon workers from the health risks associated with formaldehyde in hair-straightening treatments.
